Defending Protesters in Summons Court

Wednesday, September 9, 2020   4:00 – 6:00 pm

A CLE (Continuing Legal Education) course

(2 NY CLE Credits: 1.5 in Skills, .5 in Ethics)

We have all watched and participated in the protests following the murder of George Floyd. In New York City, the uprisings have resulted in more than 2500 arrests of protesters, the majority of whom are charged with various offenses, including criminal curfew violations, in Summons Court.  This venue demands the participation of knowledgeable lawyers to represent those arrested even though few have experience there. This program will cover the practice and procedures of representing protesters in summons court and how mass defense strategies may be applied there.

FACULTY:

  • Renate Lunn, Training Supervisor, New York County Defender Services
  • Gideon Orion Oliver, private practice, NLG-NYC, 18-b in Summons Court
  • Em Puhl, Senior Staff Attorney, Immigrant Defense Project
  • Martin R. Stolar, private practice, NLG-NYC Mass Defense Committee
  • Michael Thomas, Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice, The Bronx Defenders
  • Jennvine Wong, Staff Attorney, Cop Accountability Project, Special Litigation Unit, Legal Aid Society

Attendance fees: free for members; non-member attorneys $25.00 with one-year free membership; public defenders, law students and legal workers free.
Dues waivers upon request to nlgnyc@igc.org.

Live Webcast format. Transitional/non-transitional (attorneys admitted less than two-years years). Under CLE regulations, credit will be offered only to those attorneys completing the entire program; attorneys attending only part of the program are not eligible for CLE credit. Certificates will be sent upon receipt of completed affirmation of attendance forms following the program.
