Animal Rights Webinar: Desmond's Law

Dear Colleagues, Friends and Animal Advocates,

We're getting political.  Here's why:

  • 71% of women fleeing a domestic violence situation said their partner threatened, injured or killed their companion animal.
  • In 88% of homes where children are being abused, companion animals are being abused.
  • EVERY school shooting between 1997 and 2001 involved boys who had committed animal cruelty first.

Animal cruelty is a

Yet, 80% of these situations do not receive any attention.  None of the victims-- human or animal-- receive any counselling or assistance.

What if we had humane education in our schools and counselling for families in crisis?  What if attorneys or law students volunteered their time to investigate beyond an arrest warrant, creating a nuanced report to be shared by all parties?

Enter Desmond's Law-- the brainchild of Diana Urban, Jessica Rubin and Zilla Cannamela.

Desmond's Law provides for a free court advocate; someone who can investigate more deeply... because animal abuse is often a complex issue deserving attention.

On Wednesday, February 24th, Prof. David Rosengard and Clinical Prof. Philip Tedeschi open our discussion, describing restorative justice in animal abuse cases.  Joining them are the heroes who made Desmond's Law a reality Connecticut, and the politicians and animal rights champions who can make it happen here in New Jersey and New York.
